Diving In

The season is here - I saw swimsuits in the stores this past week! While I’m not ready to jump into an outdoor pool yet, it did make me think about how different people approach swimming pools. I could easily identify 4 types of people and I think you’ll see where I’m going with this.

One Toe Testers
These are the people you’ll find sitting around the pool keeping an eye on the activities and may casually stroll by from time to time and stick one toe in to see how the water feels.

Edge Dwellers
You’ll find these people contentedly sitting around the edge, often on the steps. They have both feet in, but not very far and they can easily jump out of the water and run.

Cautiously All In
One step at a time, but never looking back best describes this group of people. They’re committed to going in the pool but it’s the first step, then the second, then third before they reach the floor of the pool. However, they are standing on their tiptoes before slowly inching deeper and deeper into the water. Eventually they are completely in and happy to be there.

Look Out Below! (aka Cowabunga!)
This last group has made the decision and they are jumping in with everything they’ve got. They can’t change their mind because they are already committed completely and you can’t stop and turn around in mid-air, nor would the thought cross their mind.

These descriptions reminded me of the variety of people who may be ready to consider volunteering. Admit it – you already knew that’s where this was going, right? Some are willing to test it out one time while others are ready for a bit more to see how things go. No matter how you would describe yourself, God and Crossroads needs you and we have a place ready and waiting for you.

Last time I asked you to ask God to keep the idea of serving on your mind and to be open to considering the possibility. This time I’m asking you to take the next step. If you’re ready to get in the pool, we are ready for you. On the back of the Connection Card, please check the volunteer box. If you really want to have fun, let me know which description fits you. You can also drop me an email or call me.

Maybe you’re in the pool clinging to the edge or floating on top – that’s okay. Together we’ll find the best fit for you. I promise you I won’t plug you in where you aren’t ready or overwhelm you. Come on in, the water’s fine. I can hardly wait to hear from you.

Lois Flores, Volunteer Coordinator

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 (ESV)
